6:12 PM: There are times when quarterback Jalen Hurts holds the football in the pocket, looking to extend plays. And sometimes when that happens, he holds it and holds and eventually is sacked for lost yardage and, well, fans and observers wonder why in the world he is holding the football so long.
Head Coach Nick Sirianni doesn't wonder. In fact, he appreciates and admires Hurts' ability to do just that: Extend plays. And then, ultimately, to make big gains with his arm throwing down the field or his legs running the football.
"He has this unique ability to get out of trouble and create plays," said Siriani, who said the team will update Hurts' injury situation later in the week, "and I think what you see is – I think it's easy to look and say, 'Oh, he got sacked this many times,' or 'He got sacked that many times,' and not account for all the rushing yards that he's had when he's been able to extend. It happened three or four times yesterday (Sunday against the Rams) where one of those things happened that I mentioned whether it was a breakdown, whether it was a coaching error, a receiver not getting open, whatever it was, where he scrambled and got a big play out of it, got a positive play out of it.
"So, you're going to have a little bit of that balance where he may take a sack as well. But I know this: It's gotta be a balance, but I know how many plays he's made with his feet and that doesn't mean you just extend and make a play running. Also the ones that he extends and throws to the guys down the field."
Bottom line: Jalen Hurts is protecting the football, making plays. The Eagles are winning and, as Sirianni says, Hurts "gives us a chance to win every single week." – Dave Spadaro
4:12 PM: Tight end Dallas Goedert has been a force in the playoffs with 8 receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown. His run blocking has helped Saquon Barkley dominate the postseason. He's physical. Goedert missed seven games with injuries during the regular season, but the Eagles sure love having him healthy in the postseason.
"He has a knack to make plays in big moments, that's for sure," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said on Monday at his virtual press conference. "I think back to the games … he makes these really big splash plays too where sometimes they're not even for a lot of yards, but it's just so energetic with the physicality that he brings to it that it's huge. He runs a route yesterday (against the Rams) on that 30-plus (31 yards) gain that Jalen (Hurts, quarterback), we had great protection on the play, Jalen puts a good throw on him. Dallas did such a good job of getting open on that route against 'man' coverage. It was a really great route. Just a 'find' route. He got into it, stuck the defensive back the opposite way, stuck a seed of doubt into his mind, and then continued on.
"And then there's all the things he's done in the run game for us. It's so important. Having to hold down the 'C' gap on the back side or on the front side against guys that are huge players on the other team. I can't say enough about what he brings to this football team. He has an ability to make plays in big moments. I think that speaks to how calm, cool, and confident he is. When you're confident in yourself those moments, you shine in those moments and he's been really good. He had a great game yesterday, run game and pass game. He's been playing good football."
Goedert had five catches for 61 yards in the Week 11 win over the Commanders. He was sidelined due to a knee injury for the rematch in December. – Dave Spadaro
